Marple Newtown Tiger Marching Band at Hershy Cavalcade Championships

On Saturday, November 10, at the Hershey Park Stadium, the Marple Newtown Tiger Marching Band earned second place at the Cavalcade of Bands Championships. They also earned the award for High Music. They competed against 16 other marching bands in the Liberty Division (bands of 59-83 members), earning a score of 94.6 out of 100. Members of the Tiger Band’s senior class accepted the awards on behalf of the Tiger Band. The Tiger Band performed their field show “The Grid,” music by Frank Sullivan and drill by Todd Marcocci. The Tiger Band is under the direction of Michael S. Massimo. Additional staff are Laura Wooden, Richard Schmidt, Colin Hayden, Jake Olimpi, Steve Weiss, Greg Gillin and Sherwood Solely. Senior Nate Pentz is Drum Major.

The Tiger Band will be participating in West Chester’s annual Holiday Parade on Friday, November 30. Tiger Band members are also selling tickets for their annual Gift Card Bouquet Fundraiser. Marple Newtown Music Parents Association will raffle off gift cards totaling $2000 to three winners at Marple Newtown High School’s annual Winter Concert on December 19, 2012. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Winner does not need to be present. Tickets can be purchased from any MNHS music student or look out for us at the December 1 Broomall tree lighting, December 2 Newtown Square Tree Lighting, MNHS fall play “A Christmas Carol” on December 13, 14 and 15 and at our Winter Concerts on December 18 & 19 at MNHS.

Chichester Marching Band–Making Some Noise!

On Sunday, November 11, 2012 The Chichester High School Marching Band proved they are a force to be reckoned with. Presenting a strong, vibrant and entertaining show, Chichester soared with such outstanding music and high energy you could not help but bop along. Chichester Marching Band placed 2nd to Bermudian Springs by 1.5 points in the Independence A division. However placing second was sweetened by the outcome of not only surpassing their own personal high score of 80.95 to bring in a 85.45! Included along with the score Chichester Marching Band received three special Awards. High Auxiliary, High Effect & High Visual.

Chichester Marching Bands show this year included four Journey songs, Anyway you want it, Open Arms, Separate ways & Don’t stop believing. Among the four selections were soloist Tyler Wooters on Trumpet, Brianna Cronin on Trombone, Ed Stencler on Trumpet. Guard soloist; Alexis Rodriguez, Jenni Lee, Kayla Houser, Lynda Houser, Rhiannon Charney and a Percussion Feature.

Chichester Marching Band is under the direction of Mr. Ted Chaney-Miadzinian as well as Assistant Director Mr. Daniel Brown, Horn line instructors Mr. Tony June and Mr. Mike Howell. Percussion Head Mr. John Conover. Guard Instructors Mrs. Krystin Brown and Ms. Norene Gipe.

SUN VALLEY MARCHING BAND – BASES LOADED!

I know it’s the time of year when everyone is usually cold and huddled around the gridiron; however the Sun Valley Marching Vanguards have managed to keep the boys of summer alive this fall with their show “Bases Loaded: America’s Favorite Pastime.” The show’s four sections include: I. Play Ball!; II. Legends; III. Seventh Inning Stretch; and IV. Home Run!

Not only will the music entertain you, but intertwined throughout the show are sound bytes of legendary baseball moments, including Lou Gehrig’s infamous retirement speech, the announcement of Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s record, and my all-time favorite, Harry Kalas reveling “that ball’s outta here!” The guard is dressed in vintage uniforms from the World War II era, or as most readers will remember, costumes similar to those used in the movie “A League of Their Own.” It’s hard not to have a nostalgic moment while watching these dedicated students perform this show. One might find oneself yearning for a box of Cracker Jack or spontaneously humming “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

The commitment of this Marching Unit and Guard shows in their performance. Not only have they regaled fans during halftime at Sun Valley home football games, but they have also caught the eye of the Cavalcade Judges and have four 1st place wins to prove it-Chichester on Sept. 15, 2012: Ridley on Sept. 22, 2012: OJ Roberts on Sept. 29, 2012: and Unionville on Oct. 20, 2012. with the guard receiving High Guard Award at the recent Unionville competition and the entire Marching Band recieving the Brandywine cup for highest overall score, also at Unionville.

The Sun Valley Marching Vanguard Band is led by Director Tim Pry; Assistants Mike Stadnicki and Justin Heimbecker, Percussion Staff – Keith Henning and Amanda Breslow; Color Guard Direction – Eileen Pry and Kristin Peers, Drill Design – Steve Rinda; Music Arranger – Gary P. Gilroy and Percussion Arranger Nathy Eby.

MNHS Tiger Band earns 1st place in the Cavalcade of Bands Competition

The Marple Newtown High School Tiger Marching Band earned first place in the Liberty Division at the Cavalcade of Bands Competition held recently at West Chester East High School. The Tiger Band earned a score of 80.7 out of 100 performing their 2012 field show “The Grid”. Music by Frank Sullivan and Drill by Todd Marcocci. The Tiger Band is under the direction of Michael S. Massimo. Next the Tiger Band will travel to OJ Roberts High School to perform in their Cavalcade show. On Saturday, October 13 at 6:00 pm, the Tiger Band will host nine Bands here at Marple Newtown High School for their 43rd annual BANDARAMA. Tickets are $10 for Adults, $7 for Students/Senior Citizens. A discount will be given to Adults living within a 3 mile radius to MNHS at the student price. Refreshments will be available. Come out for an evening of great family entertainment and support your high school musicians!

West Chester East Announcement.

I would like to take this opportunity to promote the West Chester East High School band competition next weekend at our high school, Saturday, September 29th at 450 Ellis Lane, West Chester, PA 19380. There will be 11 bands competing including a performance of the National Anthem by the Fugett Middle School 7/8 band. The following bands will be competing Marple Newtown, Ridley, Springfield, Kennett, Hunterdon Central Regional, Penn Wood, Downingtown West, Southern Regional, Great Valley, Haverford and Upper Perkiomen High Schools.

The competition begins at 6pm, rain or shine (rain location will be the gym for a standstill music performance). Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students/seniors.

The East High School Band is 43 members strong and this year our theme is “Once Upon a Time…” the classic story of Snow White versus the Wicked Queen; good versus evil. The music has been composed by Center X productions arranger Sean Wagoner and Alan Keown with drill design by Justin McAdams and color guard choreography by Joshua Jefferson.

Ridley Marching Show Rain? Yes! but the show must go on!

The Ridley marching show this past Saturday made for great entertainment with some added excitement from mother nature. The marching show consisted of 14 Marching Bands, The Temple University Marching Band and of-course Ridley themselves. Many band members, parents and spectators alike all seem to notice one main theme at Ridley, the brightly colored tie-dye tee-shirts, which when you looked close enough did not have their names on them but the instrument they played. While the majority of the show took place on a nice sunny day with a breeze mother nature decided to make an appearance as Haverford HS Marching Band was performing their show. KUDOS to Haverford marching band! While the spectators and previously played bands ran for cover as the sudden burst of heavy rain fell you looked back to see that Haverford HS remained on the field playing through their set. After completing their set they still marched off as normal. That’s dedication! After the brief delay the remaining four marching bands and Ridley themselves took the floor inside and while not able to perform the drills it was a great ending to a somewhat crazy evening.

Another First for Chichester High School Marching Band!

This past Saturday Chichester HS marching band participated in the Ridley HS marching show. Luckily their performance happened before the downpour that soaked everyone in attendance. The Chichester marching band performed numbers from Journey. The numbers were entertaining and the soloist were solid. Chichesters guard portrayed the time periods style with vibrant colors and teased hair.

In the end the performance earned Chichester HS marching band with their first First place trophy since being back in the competitive circuit. As Chichesters Drum Majors: Tim Cislo and Virginia Tanner accepted their trophy the band and parents erupted in celebration.

Chichester HS also hosted its first Cavalcade of Bands show on Sept. 15. 2012. This definitely seems to be the year of first for Chichester HS Marching Band. We wish them the best of luck in the future.

The Marple Newtown High School Tiger Marching Band would like to thank the Sunoco at West Chester Pike in Broomall and the community for supporting them in a very successful car wash on Sept 15. The Tiger Band has been busy rehearsing their 2012 field show called “The Grid”. Music by Frank Sullivan and Drill by Todd Marcocci. The Tiger Band is under the direction of Michael S. Massimo. The Tiger Band performs at all MNHS football games. The Tiger Band and Marple Newtown Band Parents Association are preparing for their 43rd annual “Bandarama” on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 6:00pm. Nine local area high school marching bands will compete this evening. Admissions prices are $10 for Adults and $7 for Students/Senior Citizens. Come out for fun evening and support these talented musicians!
